6 Best Browser Based Crypto Wallets for 2025
In this tutorial we’re going to look at the best crypto wallets of 2025, including my new favorite crypto wallet, which has dethroned my favorite from last year.
Also, it’s worth mentioning that the wallets that I’ll explore in this video are all web based hot wallets which have browser based extensions. So in order to make this list, a wallet needed to give users the ability to directly interact with decentralized apps & defi applications.
Also, as a sidenote, If you want to learn how to develop Web3 applications, without having to know how to code, head over to Nebulum and check out our no-code blockchain development course. In this course you’ll learn how to build a huge assortment of web3 applications. For example, we’ll teach you how to build crypto trading bots, defi applications, crypto games, smart contract SaaS applications & peer to peer marketplaces. You’ll also learn how to do things like create forced directional charts that track the early token distribution of a coin and monitor, in real time, for the wallet activity of influencer or whale wallets. And you’ll learn how to do all of this without having to write a line of code. I’ll provide a link to our no-code blockchain development course as well as an enrollment coupon code in the description below.
Okay, with that said, let’s jump in.
1. Metamask
First, on the list, we have MetaMask. Metamask is a self-custodial wallet, meaning that- you control your own private keys without having any third party manage them for you. Metamask is a fantastic wallet for those who want to interact with Ethereum or any layer 2 chains or side chains such as Base, Arbitrum One, Polygon or Optimism. You can get Metamask as a desktop app, mobile app or a browser extension. However, it’s most common to use MetaMask as a browser extension because this allows you to easily interact with Web3 apps. Many Web3 apps allow you to login through your MetaMask wallet and then interact with their services directly through your wallet.
Now if you’re working primarily within the Ethereum ecosystem, metamask is great. You can buy, sell, swap, bridge, send & receive tokens. You can work with any of the over a million tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. This includes ERC20 tokens like Ethereum, layer 2 tokens like Base, or NFT tokens like crypto kitties, bored ape yacht club, doodles or pudgy penguins.
However, where metamask starts to choke is in it’s ability to connect to other non EVM networks. For example, on networks like Bitcoin or Solana.
Recently, they have made some progress here, with their introduction of “snaps”, which are add-ons designed to extend what MetaMask is capable of doing. One of the most popular snaps Metamask has in their snap directory is the solana snap which allows you to bridge to sol and connect MetaMask to any solana app.
While I think this is a step in the right direction, the snap experience feels very fragmented to me. You won’t see your Solana balance within your MetaMask wallet. YOu’ll need to bookmark a solflare page, to be able to see most of your solana details. It’s a workaround, and it does work. but it’s not a very integrated experience.
The other option within MetaMask to hold tokens from non Ethereum based chains would be to hold the wrapped equivalent of that token. For example, you can buy Bitcoin or Solana, or at least a wrapped version of those tokens, through Metamask. Wrapped tokens are simply tokens that are wrapped so that they work on other blockchains, while at the same maintaining the pegged value of the underlying cryptocurrency.
So it’s not entirely inflexible and as you can see, and there are workarounds for the limitations that are inherent, not just in ethereum, but in most blockchains.
Overall, Metamask is one of the best and most popular wallets for engaging in the decentralized web.
2. Coinbase
Next, let’s talk about the coinbase wallet. This wallet was created by the team behind the popular centralized exchange, but the wallet should not be confused with the exchange. They are entirely separate things. The wallet is a non custodial wallet which means that you have control over your own secret keys and you don’t have to have a coinbase account to use the wallet. Now some of the main benefits of using the coinbase wallet are that it supports a wider range of blockchains. For example, out of the box you’ll have access to Solana, Ethereum, Bitcoin, dogecoin and litecoin. For me, this is one of the biggest benefits of the coinbase wallet. After you set up your wallet, if you go over to your receive tab, you’ll notice that you have wallet addresses for each of these blockchains. For example, here is my ethereum address, my solana address, my bitcoin address and so on. So although you can use wrapped tokens within the coinbase wallet, you don’t need to exclusively rely on them, as you have access to the main underlying asset.
If you’re a developer you can also add testnet tokens and for any token not listed in the wallet, you can add custom tokens as well.
Speaking of testnet tokens, if you’re interested in learning how to build on top of ethereum, you can get testnet tokens over on our Ethereum testnet faucet page. These tokens are great for when you’re building dapps but want to be able to test your dapp without having to pay gas fees. So I’ll provide a link to this Sepolia testnet faucet below. Just go to that page, watch the video, and follow the steps. You’ll receive testnet tokens in your wallet within a matter of seconds.
Another benefit to using the coinbase wallet is that, if you’re already a user of their exchange, it’s an easy way to link your wallet to your exchange holdings. So this wallet can be an easy way to go from cash to crypto or vice versa.
3. Phantom
Next, up we have the phantom wallet. The phantom wallet is to Solana, what Metamask is to Ethereum. Solana has been gaining in popularity because it’s blazing fast and shockingly cheap. This has made solana a serious ethereum competitor. In the past ethereum has struggled to keep its network speeds fast and transactions affordable. Etherereum is continuing to make progress on these fronts and layer 2 chains built on Ethereum (for example Arbitrum or Optimism) help dramatically with transaction speed & cost issues. However, Solana remains the faster and cheaper blockchain. That said, it achieves this through a more centralized approach, and this approach has left it, at times, more vulnerable to outages.
So with that all being said, the phantom wallet is one of the most popular wallets within the solana ecosystem. It’s particularly popular for people in the meme coin space. HOwever, it’s not just for Solana. Phantom comes out of the box with multi-chain support for solana, ethereum, polygon, base, sui & bitcoin networks.
I can also enter testnet mode and I can use both my sepolia as well as my solana testnet tokens when developing dapps on either the EThereum or Solana blockchains.
In a nutshell, I think the phantom wallet is great for people primarily interested in the solana ecosystem. Although it’s not limited to that blockchain and you can do swaps across chains, it’s focus is undoubtedly on the solana blockchain.
4. Rabby
Next up we have Rabby. Rabby is a Multi-chain open source crypto wallet supported by d-bank. The wallet Supports NFTs & crypto including ETH, USdt, EThereum and Ethereum layer 2 chains. What most people love about Rabby is that they have an Extra layer of risk control built in. Every action that you take within the wallet, whether you’re interacting with dapps or sending transactions will result in very clear & easy to understand messages that confirm your understanding of what you’re doing. If there are any warnings or security issues, the wallet is quick to point those out to you to make sure you understand the risks of your current interaction. You can also add custom networks and tokens within the wallet if the tokens you want to interact with don’t come bundled with the wallet of the box.
So Rabby is a great option for you if security is a major concern. It’s one of the highest rated extensions on this list. Second only to my new favorite which I’ll get to soon. However, unlike some of the other wallets within this list, like coinbase, you can’t buy tokens from directly within the wallet.
But it supports all the EVM chains and has support for testnet tokens for WEb3 developers.
5. Trust wallet
Next up we have trust wallet. Trust wallet is a Multi chain wallet that supports many blockchains. In fact, I think it supports more tokens and blockchains than any other wallet on this list. For example, if I were to login to the wallet you’ll see that if I click on receive, I automatically have many wallet addresses created for me including BNB, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Polygon and Solana. I could also add additional coins like dogecoin, polkadot and many other tokens. On their website they boast that they give wallet users access to 10 million assets, 600 million nfts and over 100 blockchains.
You can also connect your trust wallet to a hardware wallet, like ledger, for an extra layer of security. Another thing that sets trust wallet apparent is that you can earn crypto within the wallet through the wallets built in staking mechanism, a feature that not all wallets in this list have.
6. OKX
Now, I’ve saved my favorite wallet for last… OKX. Out of all the wallets on the list it also currently has the highest extension rating on Chrome’s extensions marketplace.
OKX was started as a crypto exchange. Their self custodial wallet’s code is open source and it’s been heavily audited. It’s a popular wallet for meme coin traders because it shows a lot of analytics relating to meme coins within the wallet itself (like a token’s number of holders, transaction volume, market cap, unique traders, token age, liquidity and so on). You can also add tokens to a watch list from within the wallet.
One of the things I love most about the wallet is that it supports a huge number of EVM and non-EVM networks, making it easier for you to access DApps on different networks without having to switch wallets. Out of the box you’ll get access to SUI, Ton, Cosmos, Aptos, Solana, Bitcoin, Ethereum & all Ethereum Layer 2 tokens.
